Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks give it their all, but their solid performances aren't quite enough to compensate for The Next Three Days'.

I'll say one thing for "The Next Three Days," a ponderous but mesmerizing tick-tock thriller starring Russell Crowe in his depresso-shlump mode, unshaven and unlaundered and apparently making frequent midnight raids on the fridge. It's a way better use of writer-director Paul Haggis' peculiar talents than the Oscar-sweeping "Crash. In "Crash," Haggis seemed to be presenting his beautiful people and impossible events as if they might hypothetically occur in the real world and therefore possess, y'know, social significance. Haggis wrote the last two James Bond movies, so he's no stranger to fantasy-adventure movies. And yes, the fact that John Brennan Crowe teaches Cervantes' picaresque novel is meant to be a ding-ding-ding moment: He tilts at windmills, dreams the impossible dream, etc. John and his peroxide-blond wife, Lara Elizabeth Banks , purportedly lead a normal, yuppified life, raising their 3-year-old son in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

THE NEXT THREE DAYS Review

It was released in the United States on November 19, , and was filmed on location in Pittsburgh. Lara Brennan is wrongly convicted of murdering her boss and is sentenced to life in prison., Or maybe a violent, feature-length version of one of those once-hot cable television makeover shows.

"The Next Three Days": Russell Crowe's gloomy jailbreak

It's a cast-iron rule that remakes of foreign films aren't a patch on the original. But this version of a French movie bucks the trend to be actually better. The original was a tense, searing French outing called Anything For Her about a man who hatches a plan to spring his missus from prison. This version isn't all that different but ramps up the action and increases the tension, making it one of the most engaging thrillers in a long, long time. In a nicely understated role, Russell Crowe plays family man John Brennan whose life is thrown into chaos when armed police storm the home he shares with his wife Lara Elizabeth Banks and young son, dragging her away on a murder charge.
