Ahead of the series finale for the hit television show The Big Bang Theory, Canadian musician Ed Robertson shares how he came up with the catchy theme song while he was barenaked in the shower. The legendary frontman for the Canadian alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies said it was a twist of fate that brought the group and the long-running sitcom together. Twelve years ago, Robertson said he and the band had no idea famed television writers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady were in the audience at one of their L. Robertson admitted he was initially hesitant to accept their offer because he had written music for films and television shows in the past, but they were never picked up. He credits his wife with persuading him to embrace the opportunity.

And who happened to be in the audience? And the rest is history. OK, not quite. Lorre and Prady — who had already been discussing the action-packed "lyrical engineering," as Lorre put it, of the BNL hit "One Week" — contacted the band to create a song that encompassed everything that's happened since the beginning of time up to the present in 15 seconds. Not an easy feat, to say the least.

The Big Bang Theory ended with a sweet scene over, what else, Chinese food. As they shared laughs and food, an acoustic version of the theme song, "History of Everything," played. See it below. I thought it was great and I said, 'That's our theme song. The song was re-recorded for the theme, but Lorre wanted to bring it back to help the show close out. Executive producer and co-creator Bill Prady said the scene was shot early in production of the series finale, and they shot it a few times to get the camera movement they wanted. The Big Bang Theory theme song is well known by just about anyone. We all know the signature voices of the Barenaked Ladies that show up after the cold open of every episode. In fact, if you went up to the average person and sang the first line of the song, chances are they'll know the next one. If anything, they'll at least know what you're talking about. We're also willing to bet that you've had the song stuck in your head at least once in your lifetime.

All three also served as head writers. The show premiered on CBS on September 24, and concluded on May 16, , having broadcast a total of episodes over 12 seasons. The show originally centered on five characters living in Pasadena, California : Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper , both physicists at Caltech , who share an apartment; Penny , a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's similarly geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali. The show was filmed in front of a live audience and was produced by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions.

  1. The song title is similar to A Short History of Nearly Everything , a popular science book by Bill Bryson that explains some areas of science to a general audience.
