The present day appearance of the palace began to take shape in , when the old, solid castle was transformed into a Ducal residence, a prestigious place to be used for summer holidays and as an official court venue. A sophisticated foreshortening effect and an unexpected virtual multiplication of spaces show just how much passion there was to artificially imitate materials and nature through painting. Working on the large complex of the Palace, which also includes the palatine chapel dedicated to Saint Francis and the magnificent Peschiera, was the Roman architect Bartolomeo Avanzini, inspired by the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the structural renovation and decorative Baroque solutions, as well as renowned set designers, particularly the Reggio-born Gaspare Vigarani, also active in the court of Louis XIV. The intense restoration of the palace as well as its use as a museum today allows for the decorated area to be fully exploited.
Ducal Palace of Sassuolo
Palazzo Ducale - Sassuolo
The palace was built on the site of a medieval castle or rocca. The exterior facade seems to reference Tuscan villas more than those of the Veneto. In the midth century, the first pleasure summer villa was built on the site. In the early 17th century, the Duke Francesco I d'Este commissioned the present building from the architect Bartolomeo Avanzini. Over the centuries, the palace has had many owners, but is now owned by the town of Sassuolo and the Gallerie Estensi , who contributed to the picture galleries the Orlando, Princess and Secchia apartments. Lattanzio Maschio and Luca Colombi were also invited by Boulanger to work on the palace stucco decoration. The palace is also known for its garden vistas reminiscent of Versailles and its fanciful ' Peschiera' or fish-tank.
The story of the Palazzo goes back in time, probably dating back to the time of Matilde of Tuscany. During the thirteenth century, it was recorded as part of the Della Rosa kingdom until the Este conquest of After the House of Este moved its capital from Ferrara to Modena, Francesco I converted the residence in Sassuolo into a Baroque palace whilst simultaneously transforming the Este castle in Modena into the colossal urban Palazzo Ducale.
