We saw some GC sparklers, not fireworks today, purely because everyone seemed equally on their limit! Katusha pushed the pace early on which ultimately lead to a Zakarin attack on the final climb and he was joined by Pozzovivo. We had a bit of cat and mouse-ing between that group and it looked for a while as if those dropped on the climb were going to get back on. However, thanks to some close motorbikes and some dodgy time gaps anyway, they were able to duke it out in the sprint to the line, holding onto a 15 second advantage from Dumoulin and co. The course descends at a very shallow rate from around 9km to go all the way to the finish.

Totalling 3,km kilometres in length, the race will comprise six sprint stages, eight stages of medium climbing difficulty, five strenuous mountain legs and two individual time trials. The combined The penultimate day to Asiago also has a difficult climb near the end, but false flat after the summit may permit some regrouping. The race begins with three stages on Sardinia, following earlier starts in and The first of these is a kilometre mainly flat stage from Alghero to Olbia on Friday May 5. This is followed by a lumpier kilometre race to Tortoli, then a kilometre stage to Cagliari which looks tailor-made for sprinters. The latter is appearing 50 years after it was first used, and will act as the first summit finish of the edition.

At that point Dumoulin, sitting in a tent by the finish having completed his race 10 minutes earlier, was finally able to overcome his nerves and smile. The die was cast soon after the start on the Monza motor racing circuit, with Dumoulin 31 seconds faster than Quintana at the first time check after 8. That suggested he would take the final pink jersey, but not by a great deal; nine kilometres later, on the outskirts of Milan at Sesto San Giovanni, Quintana was timed one minute slower, his lead lost but by no means conclusively. The maths was simple; they all needed to gain between five and six minutes on Dumoulin. But here it proved impossible. That sounds simple but it takes self-discipline and a cool head to avoid the obvious temptation to push just a little bit harder.

They should never do that again, because when I crossed the line, it was still so close.
