Chasing a sixth US Open title, Federer needed just one hour and 46 minutes under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium to put away the 31st seed Lopez, leaving plenty in the tank after being forced to go the distance in his opening two matches. Just another casual rogerfederer backhand winner USOpen pic. It has been a far different start to the US Open than Wimbledon where an economical Federer stormed to his 19th grand slam title without dropping a set. In his opening two matches at Flushing Meadows, a misfiring Federer had been forced to five sets, first by American young gun Frances Tiafoe then Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny. After being broken eight times and committing a whopping unforced errors in those first two contests, a focused Federer tightened up his game against Lopez, operating with his hallmark efficiency. Not too man moments of magic so far from Lopez but this backhand crosscourt winner was USOpen pic.
Federer, 36, took the first set in under 30 minutes and added the second by the same score as he rarely looked troubled, unleashing moments of occasional brilliance as he dealt with Lopez comfortably. The world number three, looking to win his third Grand Slam of the season after the Australian Open and Wimbledon, broke Lopez in the fourth game of the third set but finally encountered some resistance as his opponent immediately broke back. Roger Federer dismissed any fears about his fitness as he confidently swatted Feliciano Lopez aside, winning in the third round of the US Open. Federer’s match was the first of the evening session but started deep into the night due to overrunning matches, with play.

The third seed, who came through five-set matches in the first two rounds, beat year-old Lopez Top seed Nadal earlier beat Argentina's Leonardo Mayer in three hours and 16 minutes. With heavy rain halting play on the outside courts in the early evening, the action on Arthur Ashe Stadium stretched to almost 15 hours across the day. Federer and Lopez did not get under way in the night session until local time BST - almost three hours later than scheduled - and Madison Keys' win over Elena Vesnina ended at local time. Saturday's night session began with the oldest match-up at the US Open since year-old Jimmy Connors played year-old Ivan Lendl in Federer looked sharp, showing no sign of the back issue that disrupted his build-up to the tournament, and had been in his thoughts during his first-round match in New York. The timing that was still absent in round two had returned for the most part - with just four backhand errors - and, one poor service game in the third set apart, he dispatched 13th seed Lopez efficiently.
