Lillie, up until shortly before this point a nurse in a Philadelphia hospital, hemmed in by overprotective parents but still, you know, plucky, has ventured abroad on a mission. Her medical career stifled by her unstintingly progressive beliefs, she resolves, after attending and being inspired by a lecture by Dr. Jude Josh Hartnett , the co-head of a medical mission in Anatolia, to donate a truck and medical supplies to said mission. In person. Stepping off the ship, one beautiful stranger encounters the other. A word, here, about the screenplay, by Jeff Stockwell. But of course it was the world that changed me.

Less discriminating viewers jonesing for some old-fashioned costume hokum will get just that, but lack of critical support and marquee names should make the theatrical stay of this dusty slice of exotica a short one. Her stuffy parents Paul Barrett, Jessica Turner are further mortified when their spinster-leaning year-old daughter announces she will deliver a truck and medical supplies to a remote corner of Eastern Anatolia by herself, after hearing an impassioned pitch for assistance from mission doctor Jude Gresham Josh Hartnett. After being relieved of their valuables by bandits, they arrive at Dr. Violent tensions between Armenian Christians and Turkish Muslims are already beginning to impact this remote area, soon to be exacerbated by the outbreak of WWI. It helps, no doubt, that there appear to be no other women under 60 and over legal age hereabouts. Hartnett is initially fine, albeit stuck in a role that grows more shrill and one-dimensional as it goes on. Subsidiary roles are negligible in yet another screen enterprise wherein locals are more or less extras in a story about their own regional history.

Cara Buckley of The New York Times stated that "several people familiar with" the production indicated that the producers in Turkey, unbeknownst to the director, had arranged for the final cut, and due to the post-production removal of dialog related to the Armenian genocide, "Several people who worked on the project felt the final version butchered the film artistically, and smacked of denialism". The production team of The Ottoman Lieutenant asked Project Save, an archive of Armenian photographs based in the United States, for permission to use some of the photographs.
