Petersburg, Russia, in this July 28, file photo. My eyes tell me that Keith is not playing a traditional chord shape in this photo, just barring the neck in typical G-tuning fashion. Check out Chuck Yarborough's interview with Keith's bandmate, a guy named Mick. You could do a pretty good Keith Richards impersonation on this guitar -- once we remove that fat E string. Then you're ready to start rocking This video gives you a fine lesson if you want to play like Keith Richards! Ry Cooder played with the Stones in and on among other things the "Let It Bleed" album; it was his use of G tuning that impressed Keith.
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has crafted some of the most famous guitar riffs of all time. Richards favors the use of an open G tuning, which detunes the 1st, 5th, and 6th strings one whole step. He then either avoids the 6th string or leaves it off the guitar completely. Changing the tuning of the strings like this means that standard chord shapes and scale patterns no longer work. In some cases, this creates an advantage. For example, in the tab shown in the following image, you can play a G chord in the open position with all open strings. You can then play full major chords around the neck by simple barring with one finger:.

For a long time it has been common knowledge that Keef removes string 6, the lowest sounding string. Really I didn't think this was a great idea, because it takes away some options - but I am now converted. Everything in the Keef style becomes much easier with a 5 string guitar set - up. It tends to focus the sound and prevent the muddy tone you can get with the detuned 6th string.

For example, a popular open-G tuning is. An open-G tuning allows a G-major chord to be strummed on all six strings with neither fretting of the left hand nor a capo. Like other open tunings, it allows the eleven major chords besides G major each to be strummed by barring at most one finger on exactly one fret. Repetitive open-G tunings are used by Russian guitars, Dobro guitars , and banjos. They repeat three open-string notes.
