Email address:. I recently wrapped up a ten day watercolor workshop near Urbino, Italy in the Montefeltro Hills. The course was a part of the Urbino Art Village , a set of three different workshops offered at La Corte Della Miniera , an art and agriturismo site that used to be the site of an old sulfur mine. My watercolor workshop was accompanied by a course on large format photography taught by Francesco Visconti and an intensive Italian language workshop taught by Lucia Del Moro. Each of the workshops were intensive and met every morning, afternoon and most evenings. The watercolor workshop was structured with a mixture of foundational lessons in watercolor, along with painting excursions, critiques and lectures to round out the curriculum. Every morning there would be a class which focused on a painting concept which was followed up by exercises.

With his milky white hair and beard neatly trimmed, Egiziano Piersantini is demonstrating this massive metal letter-setting machine used by newspapers for most of the 20th century. Nearby are stones used for lithography, a stone-to-paper printing process that pre-dated Gutenberg for centuries. Retired art professor Egiziano Piersantini demonstrates how to use an early printing press. These tools of human communication hark back to the beginning of human culture. The year-old professor, who taught at Varese for 20 years, and his son, Michele, 43, bought and converted this sulfur mine abandoned in the s to create an educational resort, complete with accommodations, workshops and historical printing technology. Lithography is one of many techniques guests may learn at The Mine, from graphics and printing to papier mache and pottery. The main attraction, however, is the variety of artistic workshops.
